Life-changing ones. It\u2019s part of the reason why you\u2019re able to read this now.<\/p>\n<p>But there have been consequences. And we\u2019re still learning what they are today. Let\u2019s take a look at the different marine pollution sources.<\/p>\n<h2>Marine Pollution Sources:<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3>Oil<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We\u2019ve all seen the nasty pictures from oil spills.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re devastating towards marine life. Remember the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico?<\/p>\n<p>Here are the lives that were injured or killed by it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>25,900 Marine Mammals<\/li>\n<li>6,165 Sea Turtles<\/li>\n<li>Unknown Number of Fish<\/li>\n<li>82,000 Birds of 102 Species<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Oil spills are only responsible for 12% of the oil entering the sea.\u00a0 More than twice that much comes from cities and industries.<\/p>\n<p>How? Through waste runoff. (more on that later)<\/p>\n<h3>2. Fertilizer Runoff\/Eutrophication<\/h3>\n<p>There has been a surge in seaweed production lately. This is due to a process called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalgeographic.org\/encyclopedia\/dead-zone\/\">eutrophication<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>It sounds complicated, but it really isn\u2019t.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-393 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/images.dolphinaris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/eutrophication.jpg\" alt=\"Eutrophication - How Marine Pollution Affects Sea Life\" width=\"400\" height=\"277\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the infographic above.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does it show?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Excess nitrogen and phosphorus entering the ocean.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where does it come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fertilizer, pesticide, and animal waste runoff from farms and similar industries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why does this matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because it causes excess phytoplankton growth. Before you know it, there\u2019s a thick layer of seaweed growing on top. So much so, sunlight and oxygen cannot enter past it.<\/p>\n<p>Life in the sea still requires sunlight and oxygen. Therefore, these areas become what are known as \u201cdead zones\u201d.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h3>Garbage Dumping<\/h3>\n<p>This is pretty self-explanatory. Garbage keeps finding its way to the sea. Some of it decomposes quickly. But\u2026most of it does not. Including plastics.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In fact..<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plastic kills millions of sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals each year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>4. Toxic Chemicals<\/h3>\n<p>It may sound crazy now. But there was a time where the ocean was considered a dumpster.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists thought it was large enough that we could throw anything into it safely. We\u2019re talking pesticides, chemical weapons, and even radioactive waste. Yikes.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, that begun to change in the 1970\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>However, we\u2019re still feeling the effects.<\/p>\n<p>Today, almost every marine organism is contaminated with man-made chemicals.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h3>Ocean Mining:<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Every year companies try mining the ocean for silver, gold, copper, cobalt and zinc.<\/p>\n<p>This creates sulfide deposits. The result? That\u2019s difficult to look at. Painful even.<\/p>\n<p>But you know what? The truth hurts. Our lifestyles have led to this point. We have to acknowledge this. It\u2019s the only way to move forward and correct our actions.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to do that? Take a look at the damage being done.<\/p>\n<h3>Marine Animals:<\/h3>\n<p>As we discussed above, oil-spills, city runoff, eutrophication and pollution are killing marine life in large numbers.<\/p>\n<p>But get this. It\u2019s even changing their reproductive systems. So if they are somehow able to survive the pollution, their offspring won\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>But the ripple of damage goes even further.<\/p>\n<h3>Coral Reefs:<\/h3>\n<p>You may have heard. Coral reefs are dying at an alarming rate. The truth?<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve already lost 27% of the planet\u2019s coral reefs. Scientists estimate, if we continue on this path, that figure will double in 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s tragic because\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Despite only covering 1% of the ocean, coral reefs are home to over 25% of marine fish species.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do coral reefs die?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s simple. Coral reefs live in tandem with algae.
